WEST HILL BLOG NO. 115 Repairing the Verandah, painting tyres & drinking hot chocolate by the fire
The Verandah has never been in a great state. I inherited it as a place where leaves & rubbish gathered
Where it looked unloved ...
One of the first jobs I did was to remove the sides & transform into a seating area
with shade from the sun
But because of the step, wheelchairs users couldn't access it.
Then with last winters almost continuous rain of last winter the roof bowed in, which then leaked to the floor which then rotted.
To make the space usable & safe again, we needed to mend the roof, replace rotten floor timbers, build a ramp & construct some picket fence to contain the space.
Over the last couple of weeks, volunteers Don, Mike & Steve have taken on phase 1 of the project that is to say the repair of the roof.
Don & Mike removing the old collapsed roof
After removing the damaged roof, with the blue sky & leaves of the Banana, one could have almost been mistaken for St Lucia!
Meanwhile, Annabelle has been mixing paint & painting the tyres which will be used as new raised beds. Next year they will be planted with Fennel & Nasturtium
The first new planters ... to be planted with bright orange & red flowers next year to camouflage the water tank behind
Helen, has been busy doing a variety of jobs including dead heading, weeding & cutting back the Brambles in the tunnel& explore the woodland
and drink hot chocolate by the fire
